How to distinguish between hard seals and soft seals in ball valves
Release Time:
2025-08-22
The distinction between hard seals and soft seals in ball valves is primarily based on sealing materials, operating conditions, and application scenarios. Hard seals use metal materials and are suitable for high-temperature, high-pressure environments. Soft seals use non-metallic materials and are more suitable for medium- and low-temperature, clean media.
Core distinguishing factors
Sealing materials and structure.
Hard Seals: The sealing surface is made of metal materials (such as stainless steel, copper, or hard alloys), achieving sealing through precise grinding between metals, with high requirements for processing accuracy.
Soft Seals: The valve seat is embedded with non-metallic materials (such as PTFE or rubber), utilizing material elasticity to form a seal, with lower requirements for processing accuracy.
Temperature and Pressure Adaptability.
Hard Seals: Wide temperature range (-196°C to 650°C), pressure resistance up to 150 MPa, suitable for high-temperature and high-pressure conditions.
Soft Seals: Temperature resistance generally does not exceed 180°C, pressure resistance up to 25 MPa, high temperatures may cause material deformation and failure.
Medium Compatibility Requirements.
Hard seals: Compatible with corrosive media, fluids containing solid particles or crystals (e.g., petroleum, chemical raw materials), and offer superior wear resistance.
Soft seals: Only suitable for clean, non-corrosive media (e.g., clean water, food-grade liquids), and particles may scratch the sealing surface.
Manufacturing and maintenance costs.
Hard seals: Long production cycle (requires precision grinding and hardening treatment), higher cost, but service life can exceed 20 years.
Soft seals: Lower manufacturing cost, but requires regular replacement of seal components, suitable for frequent opening and closing applications.
